The BP oil spill has made it to Florida. Our beloved Cape San Blas is in its path, and we are just heartsick. Part of me wants to pack up the girls and head there right now for one last look at the unspoiled ocean and sea life, but the practicalities of life with a newborn baby and a husband who's been in Philadelphia this weeked for a family funeral have prohibited that.
On our beach, we have seen fish and dolphins and found sand dollars and starfish and beautiful shells. We reveled in the sounds of the ocean, jumped the waves, splashed in the surf, built sand castles. We have witnessed breathtaking sunsets and moonrises, we have celebrated with friends, we have found healing. And now, what will become of this place? Alybug asked a couple days ago if Sarah would know the beach like they do or if it would be ruined. Sadly, we just don't know. Time will tell.

I'm feeling so weepy reading this post. Weepy and angry. Your children- *all* children- should be able to play safely amidst natural beauty unspoiled by industry. This is just so wrong and sad. Hugs to you, mama.
I'm not sure how it's possible that all of us don't just walk around sobbing all day these days....and we don't even live in the area immediately impacted by this. But the entire planet will feel the impact of this one way or another eventually.
Do you think joining one of the beach patrols to help pick up tar balls would be helpful or distressing for your girls? I know my guys would appreciate feeling like they're doing something positive in the wake of disaster, but I can see how some kids could be really traumetized by that (I was probably one of those kids myself), so that certainly wouldn't be the right choice for every family.
Thanks for your warm thoughts, ladies. Harvest Mom, that's a good idea- something along those lines would be good for the girls- and me, too. We're an hour from the coast and 2+ hours from our beloved white sand beaches. Our new little one hates her carseat, but we'll find a way.
