a rambling catch up and full moon fishing

Owl in her new mama made bonnet. She needs to be able to do Little House quotes too. Oh, how it's all about the Little House on the Prairie. The big girls bonnets are well-loved and 2 out of 3 have been remade with new ribbons.
some autumn-y placemats the 3 big girls and I made. Owl is there in her new little chair, which has made mealtime more fun for all of us. She's a squirmy thing in our laps and now that her hands work (as Pumpkin says), dinner with her on your lap can be an adventure.

Happy Owl. I found this photo on my camera- one of the big girls took it, along with some photos of some American Girl dolls.

Last night we fished at a favorite state park. No one caught anything, but that didn't matter. The air was crisp and clear, the moon full and bright, the lake quiet. As dark settled in on us, I read the picture book Basket Moon. I love the story of the little boy watching and waiting until he's old enough to accompany his father on basket selling trips, then when he goes along, he's taunted and ashamed of being a hillbilly. In the end the boy has a respect for the craft and the calling and he waits to hear his own calling to make baskets. Alybug listened with eager ears. She's growing up, this girl of mine.

I haven't been here in a while. I've been busy sewing- some autumn-y placemats for our table, and autumn-y skirts for the big girls, a bonnet for baby, a Little Red Ridinghood halloween costume for Em, and I'm keeping a pretty good pace with my solstice sweater knitting.

I'm creating our school lessons week by week this year. Alybug and Em are doing a hybrid of second and third grade work- I'm using some of Enki's second grade sage and trickster stories that we didn't get to last year as our main story work and we're doing mostly third grade skills work with some second mixed in for both math and language arts. Science is mainly driven by the seasons. Alybug and Em have begun taking piano lessons and are loving that. Pumpkin is super eager to learn to read, and she's making quick progress with it. When Pumpkin is motivated to do something, she dives in with gusto and passion. So, she's doing 1st grade skills work with kindergarten stories. Little Owl is just growing and growing. She's trying to crawl. When being held, she wants to stand up and see what's happening. She spends much of her day in someone's arms. At last week's riding lesson, she got her first opportunity to sit on a pony and she was quite content sitting tall on Mossy the pony in front of Pumpkin. If only I had my camera. I often say that. I got a new snazzy camera last Christmas and I still haven't read the manual. eek. I fantasize about photography- real photography. I have a couple books- haven't opened them. And I often forget to even bring the camera with me. There, I said it, so maybe just by putting my photography dreams out there, I'll open up a book or two and follow through with it.
