the doings

Our new additions from the long weekend- 4 baby chicks (we hope they're hens!) We were told they're hens, but the man who sold them to us was pretty unscientific in his certainty. The girls are in love and the baby is in frustration. Oh, how little Owl wants to squeeze these things. We're still working on names- the current talk is Laura, Mary, Carrie, and Grace. Yes, we're STILL all about Little House on the Prairie. We're learning about chick raising as we go- so far, so good. Ashley English's book Keeping Chickens has been a helpful resource.

The 3 girls worked hard to get this treehouse started. Rob helped with fortifying the board for safety. It's a little high for my preference, but it's what we've got going now.

This is the herb garden. It's got a few varieties of mint and basil, oregano, rosemary, chives, lemon verbena, pineapple sage, zinnias, strawberries and sunflowers. The girls and I have been creating some scale drawings of things around our house (working on math there) and this is one of those drawings.

The butterfly garden- fennel, dill, parsley, salvia, lantana, and pentas so far. Again, we've got a scale drawing of this garden too. We also have a vegetable garden, but no photos of that one. Some corn (we just stuck seeds in the ground, so we'll see how that fares), tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, canteloupe and watermelon. It's been hot hot hot and dry here, so we're watering lots and hoping for some rain.

We've been working inside too. Just about all the pictures are on the walls. Two of the three bathrooms have freshly painted walls. Cabinets are up next. We're still tinkering with functionality and I do have a long project and wish list, but most things have found their places.

We've discovered new fruits on the trees on our property. We have several loquat trees and ate lots of that fruit raw, but by the time we got around to figuring out how to preserve it, it had over-ripened. Next year . . . We didn't let that happen to the kumquats. Pictured here is kumquat marmalade. We have loads of blackberries ripe on the bushes now and so far are keeping up with the eating there, but we may get to making some blackberry jam yet.
